The Masters of Crystal

René Roubíček Introduces His Latest Crystal Masterpiece To The World

René Roubíček

On June 12th, 2014, the latest crystal masterpiece of Czech design and glass icon René Roubíček (b.1922) was revealed for the first time.  As part of the event In Honour of René Roubíček, this latest of René’s “glass children”, named EXPO², was introduced to both media and members of the professional art glass community.  The object was officially unveiled at the PRECIOSA Lighting glassworks in Kamenický Šenov, the birthplace of this unique piece.

The artist’s latest project brings to life the ideological link between several of his historical milestones in the world of art glass.  Its creation involved a large team of glass blowers and other specialists. The idea to create this piece was conceived in 2013, during the opening of the Back to the Future: Expo 58 exhibition.  "Last October, when I met the master and we talked, he complained that from the time he developed his first chandelier with the Šrámkovy husband and wife team, he came to be regarded as a chandelier, rather than glass artist.  He confessed, that he dreamed of creating one more magnificent glass sculpture.  Cooperating with the Jablonec Museum of Glass and Jewellery was an obvious choice as well, as this is the only museum that has glass collections from every World Expo that ever took place.” Jaroslav Bejvl. Jr., the Artistic Director of PRECIOSA Lighting, explains how the piece came about.

PRECIOSA Lighting thought it only right to give this legendary Czech artist the opportunity and to assist him in creating this magnificent crystal project – which was completed in an astounding six months!  "For me, our cooperation with the doyen of Czech glassmaking, René Roubíček, is primarily a symbol of the continuity and uniqueness of Czech glassmaking, irrespective of numerous economic and social crises throughout the years.  The tradition of glassmaking continues its own unwavering history here, and thanks to that, it is still part of the Czech Republic’s crown jewels." said PRECIOSA Lighting CEO Pavel Marek.

Prominent designers, artists and art historians from the professional art glass community, along with national and regional media, were all present at the official unveiling.  The EXPO² crystal masterpiece is sure to garner great admiration even beyond the official event.  In reality, the unveiling was only the beginning of a travelling exhibit that, in the coming months, will be moved to Prague.  The general public will thus soon also be able to see the work of René Roubíček in the nation’s capital.  In 2015, it will then travel to Milan as part of EXPO 2015.  Next, it will appear at the Shanghai Museum of Glass and will finish its long journey at EXPO 2020 in Dubai.  On top of its five-year pilgrimage across the globe, EXPO² already has a serious buyer interested in adding the piece to his private collection.
